Coffee farmers in Vietnam, the world's largest producer of Robusta coffee, are limiting the sales of the record before the harvest festival of Tet Lunar New Year, as they expect prices to rise.


The Central Bank of Vietnam said on Mondaythat will extend to 3-trillion dong ($ 144 million) financing to farmers so that they renew crops between 2013 and 2015. The funding will be for producers of Lam Dong province in the central highlands of the country. With the funds, producers will replace coffee trees on about 23 hectares, said the central bank in a statement. In total, funding for renovation of coffee plantations must be between 8-trillion and 10-trillion dong (between $ 380 million and $ 475 million).

Vietnam continues as leader of world exports of Robusta coffee, even with your shipments showing a decline of 44.61% in February this year compared to the same month of 2012 (2,798,248 bags of 60 kg). The Association of the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa designed on Friday (22/03) that coffee production in crop year 2013/14 could fall between 30% and 35% due to drought that hit the country.
A prolonged drought in the Vietnamese Central Highlands, the largest coffee producing region of the country, caused losses of at least 95 hectares of coffee trees and left 55 000 hectares in critical condition, the association said in a statement. The organization also noted that this year the rains were 30% below average.

In the first month of 2013, the Vietnamese accounted for 71.57% of global exports of Conilon, having exported 2.7 million bags. The Robusta coffee production in Vietnam should fall sharply this year as a prolonged drought wreaks havoc on crops in the country. Farmers said they expected that the harvest is 20% to 25% lower than the previous year due to dry weather during the important phase of flowering. Vietnam is the largest producer of this kind of coffee.


The Vietnam’s coffee season 2012/13 should fall by about a quarter compared to the previous record registered in crop to 18.75 million bags of 60 pounds (1.1 million tons), and next season could be affected by drought, said on Tuesday an industry official.
A smaller crop in Vietnam, the largest producer of Robusta, can help support world prices even at a time when the world production in 2012/13, which should reach 147 million bags, is much higher than demand by 141 million bags according to a Reuteurs survey.
