Coffee production in Honduras, the main producer of Central America, should reach 5 million 60-kg bags in 2014/15 (October 2014 to September 2015) season, which corresponds to an increase of 8.7% compared with the current season 2013/14 m estimated 4.6 million bags. The survey report is part of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA).
About 25% of the planted coffee area in Honduras (71 000 hectares) was hampered by the outbreak of rust. However, according to the Honduran Coffee Institute (IHCAFE), the damage has been reduced because of the planting of more resistant varieties, made in the last two decades. The renovation and replanting of coffee plantations also contribute to increase production.
Honduras expected to export about 4.7 million 60-kg bags of coffee in 2014/15. According to the USDA, in 2012/13 crop Honduran producers boarded about 1.1 million bags and organic certified coffee, which represented 25% of the total, an increase of 28% over the previous period. 'The increase in exports of differentiated coffees, and certified as organic, is the result of demand growth', says the USDA.
