The Coffee Institute of Costa Rica (ICAFE) will provide producers seeds and coffee seedlings of the variety Obatã , which has high tolerance to rust .
Since 2012, this disease causes much damage to coffee production in the country due to the decrease in the attention of the coffee plantations and climatic aspects. The technical manager of ICAFE, Ramírez explained that Obatã variety is a plant type Sarchimores (cross between the variety Villa Sarchí and the Timor Hybrid), originating in Brazil.
The ICAFE held several events for several years and was able to confirm the Obatã tolerance to rust, as well as a very high productivity, late ripening and quality of consumption.
Jorge Ramirez said that this variety has shown a very good agronomic behaviour in Perez Zeledon and was well valued in the Research Center Café (CICAFE) of ICAFE in San Pedro de Barva de Heredia. However, he stressed that the Obatã is a material that requires very good fertilization since the beginning of cultivation and should be avoided be grown in very dry places.
The ICAFE is already starting to sell seeds of this variety at low cost in its Regional Offices in all producing regions.
