A new 'Green Coffee Carbon Footprint Product Category Rule (CFP- PCR)' was published, the first of its kind for the calculation of emissions of greenhouse gases from the production of green coffee. During 18 months, various stakeholders in the sustainability of the coffee world sector have come together to create a universally applicable methodology. Nestlé, Illycaffè, Lavazza, Tchibo, Mondelez International and DE Master Blenders in 1753 joined the group of companies of the coffee sector that formed the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative (SAI) Platform, responsible for coordinating the project for the creation of the new methodology.
Result of collaboration between those actors in the coffee value chain, the new guidelines will bring consistency in the application of the calculation of emissions of greenhouse gases by reducing the gap between studies and individual products and harmonizing methodological approaches.
It should be noted that major standards-setting bodies such as 4C, Fairtrade International, the Rainforest Alliance and UTZ Certified, supported those companies.
