A study published in the British Medical Journal found that drivers who consume coffee are 63% less likely to be involved in accidents. Scientists from the Australian George Institute for Global Health in Sydney did the research.
Besides caffeine, the researchers also considered the weight of the drivers, the routine of work, sleep and exercise, alcohol consumption and the distances travelled. All these points are part of a complementary strategy to maintain alertness in driving, according to the researchers.
About four in ten participants, equivalent to 43% of drivers consumed caffeinated products to keep sleep away while driving. After analysing all the factors involved, the results showed that drivers who consumed substances with caffeine had a 63% lower probability of sleeping at the wheel compared to drivers who do not take caffeine.
With this, the scientists concluded that caffeine consumption to keep the driver awake while driving can protect you sleep and save his life. However, the scientists note that the stimulating effect of caffeine is not long lasting and should not be considered a replacement of sleep.
