A cup of coffee a day helps protect the liver against serious diseases such as cirrhosis and cancer, especially when their cause is excessive consumption of alcohol, according to a study by the Italian Mario Negri Institute. According to the researchers, caffeine has beneficial properties if consumed in adequate doses, it inhibits the action of the enzymes gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT), also called transferase and alanine transaminase (ALT), which is an indicator of cirrhosis, which triggers such diseases. We analysed 100 people for two months. Through the data collected it was possible to show that those who drank four or more cups of coffee per day had a risk of cirrhosis five times lower than those who did not take the drink with the same frequency, ie the risk of dying from cirrhosis reduces 30% in patients who consume too much coffee. The same happens with hepatocarcinoma, the most common form of liver cancer. Scientists believe that these results may lead to the discovery of protective molecules contained in coffee, antioxidants probably, but remember that too much of these can also cause problems such as tachycardia and insomnia.
