ABIC (Brazilian Association of Coffee Industry) announced in a press release that will expand next year, their Purity Seal program, which aims to combat frauds that are detected in the raw material used in the manufacture of roasted and ground coffee.
Nathan Herszkowicz, executive director of the organization, said that the number of samples analysed by laboratories accredited by the current program will be 2800 to 6000 in 2014.
Responsible for this, the main objective is to extend this program to the entire Brazilian territory and inspect all the brands in the market. Currently, this program brings together 457 companies and 1132 certified brands with Purity Seal.
ABIC clarifies that, in the last twelve months, 496 cases were recorded of impurities (up 1%), of which 11% relate to members of the entity and the remaining 89% to non-members.
There are four laboratories (three in Minas Gerais and São Paulo) that perform testing in coffee samples collected by the technicians. In order to ensure the accuracy of the results, three or four times a year, the same sample is subjected to analysis by various laboratories.
