The Portuguese Industrial and Commercial Association of Coffee (AICC) is carrying out a campaign at the time of the highest traffic on the roads of Portugal. The long trips, hours at the wheel and the heat that is felt at this time contribute to making it one of the periods most favourable to road accidents. The AICC has in circulation, nationally, a collection of 10 packets of sugar, with 10 messages alluding to coffee intake in safer driving. "If sleep is not giving you a rest, pause", "The Sandman was never a good traveling companion" or "Drowsiness causes accidents in the twinkling of an eye" are some of the messages alluding to the danger fatigue may pose to drivers. According to Teresa Ruivo, General Secretary of AICC, "With this campaign we intend to sensitize the Portuguese for the benefits of coffee as the drink helps increase alertness, essential for safe driving and warn drivers about the importance of making breaks regularly - every two hours - and drink coffee."
