The current situation of falling international coffee prices is of concern because it harms producers in the world, says in a statement the executive director of the International Coffee Organization (ICO), the Brazilian Robério Oliveira Silva, referring to the strike of Colombia's coffee growers, who are asking for more government aid and a competitive exchange rate. According to a survey of the OIC, the average monthly price of Colombian coffee dropped from 244.14 U.S. cents per lb to 161.57 cents, the equivalent of 34% in the last 12 months.


Coffee production in Peru in the current season 2012/13 will be lower than expected, since the fungus “roya” affects more than a third of the country’s crops. According to the National Coffee Board of the country, around 130 000 hectares, a total of 415 000 hectares, are infected with the disease.


The Robusta coffee production in Vietnam should fall sharply this year as a prolonged drought wreaks havoc on crops in the country. Farmers said they expected that the harvest is 20% to 25% lower than the previous year due to dry weather during the important phase of flowering. Vietnam is the largest producer of this kind of coffee.


World coffee exports totalled 9.67 million bags in January 2013, compared with 8.09 million in January 2012. Exports in the first four months of coffee year 2012/13 (October/12 to January/13) increased 15.8% to 37.87 million bags compared to 32.69 million bags of coffee last year. In the twelve months ended January 2013, exports of Arabica totalled 67.08 million bags compared to 66.11 million bags last year, while exports totalled 47.59 million bags of Robusta, against 37.68 million bags.

Coffee farmers in Uganda, the main producer of Robusta in Africa are holding stocks while waiting for prices to recover the farmer, reported today the Coffee Development Authority of the country (UCDA). In the report, the UCDA said prices paid to the producer of Robusta beans dried fell at least 25% in January compared to the same period of 2012.
