Coffee exports from Uganda have increased 32% in 2012/13 season to 3.6 million bags of 60kg, the highest level in more than 10 years, said the Coffee Development Authority of Uganda (UCDA) this Wednesday. According to the state, favourable weather boosted crop yields, leading to higher yields in crop areas of central, west and south.
In the previous cycle, the country exported 2.73 million bags. The season of coffee in Uganda extends from October to September.
The east African nation seeks to recover domestic production of coffee and aims to reach more than 4 million bags in the coming years. " The weather was generally favourable throughout the season, and most new plants are entering the production phase," explained an official trade of UCDA.
Uganda has exceeded its export forecast of 3.2 million bags of coffee for the season in just 11 months, with growers to launch more stocks on the market after the harvest.
During September, Uganda exported 224,301 bags of coffee, against 176,301 bags exported in the same month of 2012.
