Experts from Ivory Coast will help Cameroon to increase coffee production by planting hybrid species, said the independent newspaper Le Messager on Thursday, 19. "Our goal is to double or even triple our production of Robusta and Arabica by 2015", said the Executive Secretary of the Council of Cocoa and Coffee Inter-professional Cameroon, Omer Gatien Maledi, after a meeting with the Ivorian ambassador in Cameroon Adama Dosso, according to the publication.
Besides the introduction of hybrid species in new properties, ancient plants, which take about five years to begin to bear fruit, will be replaced by hybrid seedlings, which should only take 10 months to grow, stressed Omar Maledi.
The move is part of the plan of Cameroon to raise the production of Robusta and Arabica to 125 thousand tons in 2015, - 100 tons of Robusta and 25,000 tons of Arabica. The annual home harvest of the two varieties has remained stagnant at around 40 000 tonnes, 35 000 tonnes of Robusta and 5000 tons of Arabica, according to data from industry and government.
